七夕的來歷，是因爲玉皇大帝的女兒織女愛上了窮小子牛郎，兩人被強行分開，一年之中，只有七夕當晚才能在鵲橋上見面。
lunar calendar：陰曆，現在通行的陽曆是solar calendar。lunar表示“月亮的”，英文名Luna其實是月亮女神的名字，有取這個名字的女生是不是覺得很開心呢?
cowherd：放牛人，也即牛郎;同樣的一個詞是shepherd，羊倌，兩個詞都有一個-herd後綴，herd有“放牧人”的意思，不過通常都是作爲後綴來構成“XX牧人”的詞。
magpie：喜鵲，幫助牛郎織女見面的大功臣哦。雖然在七夕的傳說中，喜鵲給情人們帶來幸福，但是magpie這個詞卻有一個貶義的用法，就是用來形容話多的人：She chatters like a magpie. 她說起話來就沒個完。
七夕“乞巧”的風俗由來已久，年輕女孩子們在這一天乞求的，不僅僅是巧奪天工的好手藝，還會乞求一段美好姻緣。似乎是TVB劇中經常出現七夕之夜女子祈求姻緣的橋段~不知道今年七夕，有多少人會在星空之下默默祈禱呢?

When the star Vega was high up in the sky, girls performed a small test by placing a needle on the water's surface: If the needle did not sink, the girl was considered to be ready to find a husband. Once a year, on this day, girls could wish for anything their hearts desired.
七夕之夜，未婚女子通常會向織女星乞巧，也會乞求姻緣。她們將一根針放在水面上，倘若針不下沉的話，她們就能得償所願。據說這一晚女孩子們能祈求任何心願成真。
這裏“乞巧”的這個“乞”，我們可以說beg，也可以用plead這個詞，plead to be endowed with perfect sewing skills. 貌似這兩個詞都和浪漫氣氛不符哦，plead其實更常見於法庭上，律師爲某人辯護，就是plead one's case;而那句我們耳熟能詳的“不認罪”，則是plead not guilty，反之“認罪”就是plead guilty——注意這裏的用法，比較特殊哦，是在動詞plead後面直接加形容詞guilty——法官就會經常問這句話：Do you plead guilty or not guilty?你可認罪?(好有包大人的風範啊~)
也有一個更常見的情況，就是被告人plead insanity，以精神失常爲藉口，試圖減輕刑罰。
回到七夕乞巧的風俗吧，乞巧是爲了精進自己的女紅手藝，女紅(注意啊注意啊，這裏的“紅”讀音是“工”，不要讀錯了哦)也就是針線活，用英語說就是doing needlework。印象中女紅活兒就是刺繡(embroider)吧，不知道現在還有多少女孩子會刺繡活兒呢?似乎大家都更prefer簡單易學的十字繡 (cross-stitch)了。那麼，學十字繡的話，也是需要乞一下巧的吧……
至於祈求姻緣，這個恐怕還是要看緣分哦，如果兩個人是predestined to be together，那麼是無論如何都會相遇並相愛的吧。在這裏祝天下有情人終成眷屬吧!
